SYRIAN REFUGEE TRIP REPORT
Dec 4-15, 2015
A big thank-you to all who supported us on the amazing exploratory trip to work with Syrian refugees. Because of security issues, there are many details I won't share. However here are some highlights:
We were able to work with one of our couples who has developed an amazingly focused and effective simple approach to making a long lasting impact on refugee families. Our partner has developed a ministry to immigrants in the city and to those in an ad hoc camp in a farming area very close to a border.
We were very excited to worship with a new church plant made up of Syrian refugees who have come to faith in Jesus. There were some 30 present which included new believers and those who are exploring Jesus’ claims and call. It was a new experience to worship with women with their heads covered who were searching for the truth.
Many of the refugees in the city come from a middle class background, but had to abandon family, home and businesses because of the war. There are also professionals who are now dependent on others to feed their family.
The families at the camp are people of the land who fled on foot from 60 to 100 miles away. Many of the women and children are eking out an existence picking cotton in local farms.
Many people responded to our trip with offerings. In addition to the original offering given by Hispanic pastors at Enlace Global we received many offerings from Hispanic Baptist churches in Oklahoma, Virginia and New Jersey and Mexico! We also received a variety of individual offerings from Mississippi, Virginia, California (there may be others I’m not remembering right now). In addition churches in Baton Rouge and Richmond provided toys, candy and winter jackets for adults.
With all of this, were able to supply food staples to the camp, 30 children’s jackets and 3 stoves. Most of this was provided for the camp, but we were also able to minister to families we met in the city while there. We also left funds for at least 10 stoves, coal for the winter, clothes and to fund the establishment of a strategic initiative to provide work for the ladies at the camp.
In addition to the ministry in our target partners, city and camp, we were able to connect with 12 Latin Americans who are serving in three other cities. We learned about a wide variety of ministries going on under sometimes difficult and trying situations. We explored ways to partner with these workers and ministries.
There is so much more to tell. I will be posting some of the wonderful stories in the coming days. Please join with me and the team as we pray about these people we now know and love and as we build a strategy forward. Pray for the team that will go in May or June.
PLEASE SEND ME YOUR QUESTIONS BY MESSENGER SO AS TO AVOID ANY SECURITY IMPLICATIONS.
